BIO

With 25+ years experience in design and green building, Jan has been a leader in the realm of indoor air quality, healthy building materials and sustainable policy implementation for over a decade. Through her company, Inside Matters, Jan provides indoor environmental quality and sustainable design consulting, education, and research to a wide variety of clients including the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence, Alameda County Waste Management Authority, PG&E, University of California Office of the President, the California Department of Public Health, various manufacturers, and Kaiser Permanente (KP) where she was the first in-house healthy and green building expert. During her tenure at KP she advised on green chemistry and healthy building materials policy, initiated and conducted in-depth materials research, and developed field studies of a variety of building materials and products. When she helped run the Green Building Program for the City and County of San Francisco, she also set policy, obtained grants from the Federal Government, and was instrumental in the writing of a landmark green building ordinance. In her past life (prior to getting into the green building arena), she did corporate design and project management and also lectured throughout Japan on design.

As one of the original LEED Faculty she taught LEED for Commercial Interiors, Healthcare, Product Manufacturers, and LEED 101. Jan is an invited speaker at universities and conferences internationally including GreenBuild, EnvironDesign, and International Society of Indoor Air Quality.

Her Bachelor of Interior Architecture is from the University of Oregon and her Masters of Science in Human Environment Relations/Applied Research is from Cornell University. Her work has been described as "Mother Earth Meets Ms. Science" since she brings a lively, practical, and common sense approach based on sound scientific research to her passion for healthy buildings and materials.
