WUFI software from Fraunhofer IBP and Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Understanding how moisture moves through building assemblies is critical to their long-term durability and performance. But moisture and heat flows are highly complex, and sophisticated software is required to model performance. WUFI (for "Wärme and Feuchte Instationär," or transient heat and moisture) is a family of PC-based software tools developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics in Germany and Oak Ridge National Lab in the U.S.. The software calculates heat and moisture transfer in multi-layer building components exposed to various climate conditions, and has been used in the development of smart vapor retarders. Among WUFI's uses are assessing the performance of roof or wall assemblies in driving rain; estimating the drying time of masonry with trapped moisture; predicting the impact of repairs; and sensitivity analysis for material substitutions.

Atlas CMU block with CarbonCure

The production of portland cement, the main ingredient in concrete, results in approximately 5% of the world's anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Though concrete sequesters some of that CO2 during curing, primarily on the surface layer, the CarbonCure Block System significantly improves this process by taking CO2 supplied from local industrial sources and injecting it directly into concrete masonry units (CMUs) during production using a specially designed mold. Atlas Block is using the CarbonCure system primarily to reduce the carbon footprint of its products, but injecting CO2 into CMUs during manufacture also improves their strength, reduces the amount of portland cement required, and speeds curing. Atlas Block also offers products with post-consumer recycled glass. Atlas Block / CarbonCure is the first product brought to market that sequesters CO2 without requiring a dramatic change in current manufacturing processes.

Amorim expanded-cork boardstock insulation

Most board stock insulation is plastic foam and contains halogenated flame retardants; some is made with blowing agents that are many hundreds of times more potent than carbon dioxide in contributing to global climate change. Expanded Insulation Cork Board is 100% natural, rigid insulation material produced from natural cork—bark from an oak tree native to the western Mediterranean region. Most of Amorim's cork forests are FSC-certified and the company's facilities FSC chain-of-custody certified. The cork bark can be harvested from mature trees every nine years without damaging the trees. To produce rigid board stock insulation, cork granules are steam-heated in an autoclave, which expands the cork and activates a natural binder, suberin, contained in the cork; additional binders, flame retardants, or other chemicals are not used in production. Large billets are then cut into slabs as insulation. The material insulates to R-3.6 per inch, offers excellent acoustic control, is highly durable, has moderate vapor permeability, and meets fire-safety requirements (Euro Class E, based on EN 13501) without flame retardants. As the wine industry is increasingly turning to synthetic corks, finding other uses for natural cork helps prevent the biologically rich cork forests from being converted to other uses.

Proglaze ETA Engineered Transition Assemblies from Tremco

Building enclosures are complicated assemblies of multiple products that have to work together in controlling moisture and heat flow. Typically, these components are not designed to function together as a system. For commercial building applications, Proglaze ETA Engineered Transition Assemblies from Tremco Commercial Sealants & Waterproofing is a complete system comprised of sealants, membranes, primers, and flashings (all its own products) and insulation and sheathings (from other manufacturers) designed to integrate well together. These aluminum and silicone components are designed to bridge between windows and other wall openings and sheet membranes in the field of the assembly. The system is designed to last 50-100 years. Tremco works with design firms to ensure proper use of the ETA and offers an industry-first warranty on the performance of the air and water barrier. Third-party testing shows that air leakage through the assembly is 0.004 cfm / ft2 and water vapor transmission is 2.59 perms. The system has 0 g/1 VOC content, and all components are Greenguard Children & Schools certified for low emissions. Tremco has eliminated phthalates from all elements in the ETA. The aluminum components are 60% recycled, 55% of which is pre-consumer.

LoE-i89 glazing from Cardinal Glass Industries

Low-emissivity (low-e) glass revolutionized the window industry, producing dramatic improvements in energy performance with relatively little impact on visibility. Traditionally, there have been two types of low-e coatings: vacuum-deposited (sputtered) "soft-coat" silver layers and pyrolytic "hard-coat" indium tin oxide layers. Soft-coat low-e has to be protected from abrasion or the elements, so is only installed on a protected surface inside an insulating glass unit (IGU). Glass with hard-coat pyrolytic coatings are typically noticeably tinted and have a "pebbly" surface-texture that is hard to clean. A new coating from Cardinal Glass is a sputtered indium tin oxide hard-coat that can be installed on an exposed surface of an IGU. This option allows two low-e coatings to be used on a double-glazed IGU, and it enables a double-glazed window to achieve a level of performance that was previously achievable only with triple-glazing. In certain configurations, a unit U-factor as low as 0.20 can be achieved. Very high light transmittance means that this coating can be appropriate for glazing applications where solar gain is desired. The LoE-i89 product is being used on tempered glass currently and will become fully available on all glass types, including annealed glass, in 2013 (replacing LoE-i81).

Viridian reclaimed wood

Huge quantities of wooden pallets, crates, and packing materials used to ship goods to the U.S. are discarded daily, wasting a valuable resource and clogging our landfills. In its Oregon facility, Viridian Reclaimed Wood processes these materials from the Port of Portland and then creates flooring, tabletops, paneling, veneers, and other products for use in commercial and residential buildings. This FSC-certified reclaimed wood includes European beech, oak (or "Fishtail oak" which has unique grain pattern), spruce and pine from Russia, and "Jakarta market blend," which is a mix of Asian tropical hardwoods sorted for consistent hardness. Viridian also offers reclaimed Douglas fir from local warehouses and school bleachers. All of this wood is heat-treated to destroy insects (no chemically treated wood is used) and kiln-dried. In any laminated or edge-jointed products, the company uses radio-frequency-cured PVA glues and finishes that meet California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards.

GeoSpring hybrid electric water heater from GE

For larger water heaters (over 55 gallons) starting in mid-April 2015, electric models will have to achieve energy factors of nearly 2.0—a level of performance that can only be achieved with heat-pump technology. An EF of 2.0 means that for every unit of energy input (electrical) there are two units of energy output (thermal); such a water heater is more than twice as "efficient" as a standard, electric-resistance water heater. This new requirement for heat-pump water heaters is fueling tremendous development work in this technology area, and the latest product is GE's newly redesigned GeoSpring water heater. The 50-gallon GeoSpring has an energy factor of 2.35 in hybrid mode, and has a first-hour rating of 63 gallons. It offers four operating modes, ranging from all electric-resistance (using two 4,500-watt elements) to all heat-pump operation. Among stand-alone heat-pump water heaters, the GE GeoSpring is the quietest, at just 55dB (though this is still noisier than most refrigerators); the product is American-made in GE's Louisville, Kentucky factory; and it carries a limited 10-year warranty.

XS-P Series streetlight from Cree Lighting

LED outdoor street and area lights can provide better visibility and energy savings than high-pressure sodium and metal halide systems, whose orange glow, omnidirectional light, and lack of sophisticated controls limit their performance. Cree's XS-P Series LED street and area light incorporates Cree LED light engines and BetaLED's NanoOptic Precision Delivery Grid optics to deliver 100 lumens per watt of either 4000K or 5700K light precisely onto the ground where needed. (Some experts suggest that warmer, 4000K light is less likely to disrupt natural circadian rhythms.) The XS-P is designed to be affordable, with a payback of as little as three years, yet it is compatible with dimming drivers and is available with optional occupancy sensors, remote monitoring, and other lighting controls. Standard models of the XS-P1 and XS-P2 deliver 3500 and 7000 lumens at 4000K, respectively, whereas the high-efficiency models are 4806 and 9612 lumens. These lights have a lumen maintenance (L70) of over 100,000 hours; meet the Illuminating Engineering Society's TM-15-11 test for backlight, uplight, and glare; and come with a 5-year warranty.

Cyber Rain smart irrigation controllers

Nearly 7 billion gallons of water are used in the U.S. annually for outdoor residential applications, primarily for landscape irrigation, with up to 50% of this wasted due to overwatering, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. WaterSense's Specification for Water-Based Irrigation Controllers was created to address this waste, and Cyber Rain was the first product to be certified to these standards. Cyber Rain systems use local weather data along with plant, sprinkler, soil, slope, and sun exposure data to calculate evapotranspiration (ET) and provide just the right amount of water to maintain the health of different plant species and avoid overwatering. The controllers are linked to "cloud"-based software via the Internet or directly through a USB port, and can be accessed remotely for real-time adjustments using smartphones or other remote devices. Compatible with rain sensors, they can also be used with flow meters that detect breaks in the system, send email alerts, and even close the valves.
