CD-ROM of 46 technical papers, 2001. Send a check (made out to “Tides Center/Ecological Building Network”) to: Bruce King, Ecological Building Network, 209 Caledonia Street, Sausalito, CA 94965. Price: $70 + $10 shipping

The First International Conference on Ecological Building Structure, held July 5-9, 2001 in San Rafael, California, brought together an outstanding array of experts in alternative building materials and technologies from around the world. In an informal setting, participants presented the results of their research, experimentation, and real-world experience with various systems, including earth-building techniques, straw-bale construction, bamboo, and pozzolanic substitutes for cement. This CD-ROM, containing papers presented at the conference and many others, captures the technical information—if not the ambiance and interaction. Using Adobe Acrobat™ PDF files, the CD-ROM contains indexes to the papers by author and subject, making it easy to browse. Although they vary widely in style and format, each paper has details that one would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. A full list of the disc’s content can be found at www.ecobuildnetwork.org, under “Events.” For anyone researching alternative building techniques, the proceedings of this unprecedented event are a valuable resource.
