AIA Honor Awards Feature Green Buildings

• The

World Birding Center Headquarters in Mission, Texas, designed by Lake Flato Architects, is an integral part of a project to restore bird habitat and features water conservation and reuse as well as natural ventilation. For more information, see case study in BuildingGreen Suite.

• The

University of Michigan Biomedical Science Research Building in Ann Arbor, Michigan, features a double-skinned curtainwall that allows for ventilation in the summer and helps bring daylight into the laboratories and offices. The project was designed by Polshek Partnership Architects.

• The

central plant at the University of California–Merced, designed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, houses a power plant, a thermal storage tank, and a telecommunications building. The project features a daylighting strategy that uses the floor to bounce daylight deep into the building.

• The

Dr. Theodore T. Alexander Jr. Science Center School in Los Angeles, designed by Morphosis, features a large atrium with an indoor bamboo garden, a green roof, and classrooms arranged in clusters to allow for a flexible teaching space.

• The

Solar Umbrella House in Venice, California, a renovation of an existing house, features a canopy made of photovoltaic panels that both shades the house and provides for its power needs. The house was designed by Pugh + Scarpa. For more information, see case study in
